Some new, interesting ways artists are looking at the music biz.

I’m guessing –g may have been compensated for SongwritersVantage? – I'm not sure.

Other ways, I noted these past weeks, to raise music-related funds for recording project(s):

Bleu: $8K minimum needed, ~$ 22K raised in two days.

(fans fund the distribution costs and have a chance to participate or get goodies (house concert, records, passes etc).

Mickey Dolenz /Peter Tork (Monkeys), Mickey Thomas (Starship), and now Todd Rundgren: Pay to witness the recording

(fans fund the record and have a chance to participate)

And Michele Rundgren (of the Tubes) new venture, “Artist Vortex”: the web site is a work in progress. Learn music from the pros. Patrick Leonard (Madonna), Matt Scannel (Vertical Horizon) and others.

Interesting times indeed…

Jenny Owen Youngs is doing the Kickstarter thing as well:

She had a goal of $20k, reached it in about 28 hours. So, she keeps setting new goals and adding more goodies to the list if the new goals are reached. I figure, if I was going to buy the album anyways, I might as well give the money directly to the artist ahead of time to help the album get made. I still get the cd at the end, and some extra goodies along the way.

Peter Bradley Adams also did this for his latest album funding.

I really like seeing this. It's the arts going back to their patron-based roots, giving the fans the opportunity to directly fund musicians they love without having to worry about a record label allocating funding/promotion.

Glen, we'd love to see you do this in the future.
